Britannia Rarity

Been looking at these for a while, and even thought Austrailian Kangaroos change each year they still arent as sought after as Britannias.

What I am wondering is why some years, like the 2001 are almost imposible to find at a decent price.

Edit - Some designs reoccur. The 2009 Britannia is the same as the 1997, the ones that are labeled 'special' are one offs.

Sorry, the original was 1987, not 1988, here are the pics

What sort of prices are you seeing?

For gold, they are always %50 above spot

Re: Britannia Rarity

They are at least 50% up for silver versions as well.
I snagged an '09 off Apmex last week and it was $33.
I do believe I paid upwards of $50 for my '03.
I will continue to buy them but I do not think I could ever part with them.

Ok, to be more precise...

They are AT LEAST %50 over spot, even for the crappy ones.

Some of the Gold ones are double spot

Yes, should have said 200% of spot. My bad, as well.

I got lucky a few months ago and bought a 1987 two piece gold proof Britannia set on ebay (1/4 and 1/10th oz) for so close to spot it was scary . . . I think I paid like $20 over spot for the set.

They're beautiful - and in that small pile of coins I have that would be the last to be sold, and only under extreme circumstances.

LOL - edited to add - mine are just like the set Irons just posted the picture of . . .

Not always, I bought the gold one above in a pawn shop in Alpharetta across the street from the Ferrari dealer (a little irony there) for $620 in summer 2006, about $40 over spot at the time.

Philip Nathan's Britannia are masterpieces of art.
The 2003 and 2001 coins are, in my opinion, two coins that will make the story of coinage. Their design is simply stunning.
I own the 2003 set both in gold and silver, and I have the 2001 set in silver too.
I collect other series, but I fell in love with those two subjects.

There is no "decent" price for art masterpieces...

My only problem with U.K., Australian and Canadian coins is that they need to get rid of the old lady on the obverse side. At least most of the worlds coins change up the people shown on different size denominations.

I agree the hag has got to go, but I think somewhere in British history somebody proclaimed all coins of the rhelm must have the image of the current hag on them.

Come on now, some versions aren't bad, she's even cute in this one.

The UK coins are too pricy for BULLION coins - they are beautiful however - but not worth the extra. I'd rather have a UHR Eagle frankly. :ARMS1:

That said for BULLION coins only I would mention the Mexican 20 & 50 peso coins. They are sold as bullion yet have dates and if slabbed  worth a tad more. The BIGGIE 50 peso coin is rather pretty with the Roman type on the rear EAGLE and front LADY. They are also 1.2 ounces so you get a big bang for one coin - and that's about as BIG as I would go  as far a weight.

Best wishes,

HS

They sure can be overpriced, but if a body is in the right place at the right time they can be bought for no more than any other bullion coin. Heck, Clawdia and I both found boxed 2 coin proof sets for spot!!bancha
If you see one in your travels ask about it, it may be cheaper priced than you think!

Does someone have an idea how many Au britannias were minted? Looked on the royal mint site, wasnt much help. They seem to be more of a collector coin than a bullion coin like GAEs.

If you are talking about the Proofs then

1250 for the 1 oz
1250 for the 1/2 oz
2250 for the 1/4 oz
2000 for the 1/10 oz

Recently, yesterday, I was bidding for a 2001 and 2003 set of silver Brittanias. I dropped out at the $100 level. They sold for $126 and $127, ouch. well above the spot+ price. These must be really, really popular. I think I'll just go for the Gold.

Try these guys, they seem to have all the mintage numbers down. You have to dig a bit to find individual britannia info.

Re: Britannia Rarity

The britannias are some of the best looking bullion coins out there. From the site that Irons gave, found mintage of proofs for most years but some missing non-proof years. Looks like most the proofs are sold in sets. Thought this quote was interesting..

Quote:

Fancy a Challenge?
If you fancy a challenge, just try getting one of every date of non-proof Britannias, either just the one ounce versions, or all four weights. It will be much harder than you think!
This must mean that the non-proof Britannias are harder to come by? Would think it would be the opposite.

Date Mintage Available Price Price $
1987 Ask 672 $Ask
1988 Ask 672 $Ask
1989 Ask 672 $Ask
1990 5,208 Ask 672 $Ask
1991 8,853 No 672 $Ask
1992 8,012 No 672 $Ask
1993 24,689 Ask 672 $Ask
1994 14,497 Ask 672 $Ask
1995 8,042 Ask 672 $Ask
1996 8,275 No
1997 Ask 672 $Ask
1998 No
1999 1,277 Ask 672 $Ask
2000 Ask 672 $Ask
2001 Ask 672 $Ask
2002 Later*
2003 Yes 672 $Ask
2004 Yes
2005 Who Knows?
2006 Who Knows?
2007 Ask 672 $Ask
2008 Who Knows?
2009 Ask 672 $Ask

Looks like most years for Au Britannias are mintages in the low thousands.

Irons 07-26-2009 10:01 PM

Re: Britannia Rarity

I just got a 1/10 2002 britannia proof, not boxed, the seller claimed the mintage at 1500.

Well if you live here you should know, that the Royal Mint hardly ever sells BU Gold Britannias, they sell to dealers on and off and dealers actually announce it as a score when they get them
As for Proofs, they never exceed 10K
